Shabana Horace Banza – Master’s Thesis Defense

Published: April 11, 2025

Since yesterday, 11.00 hours, we are proud to say – we have a new graduate, Master in Theology! Our dear brother from DR Congo, Shabana Horace Banza has sucessfully defended his MA thesis “Addressing deforestation and human suffering: A holistic mission for the United Methodist Church in Manono”.

His mentor and our colleague, dr. sc. Melody Wachsmuth stressed that in view of current realities, Shabana provided a socio-historical and ecological analysis of the intertwined suffering of people and nature in his region, specifically looking at the effects of deforestation. Looking at care for creation through a theological lens and in view of the UMC’s mission, he points the church to prophetic action through various recommendations by the end of his thesis. Dr. David Kovačević was the second reader, while dr. Aleksandar Apostolovski was presiding the defense.

Shabana was at ETS since 2021. He left his wife and children in Lumumbashi for long three years to study and serve our churches in Osijek, Zagreb, Crikvenica and many other places in Croatia and Serbia likewise, but also Estonia!

We thank our God for our brother Shabana, for his faithful service in preaching the Gospel, and his faithful witness. May God guide and protect Shabana and his family, now and always!
